Orval Earl Cowan

Orval Earl Cowan was born August 3, 1924 to Arthur Gideon and Gladys Elder Cowan and died November 11, 2013 at the age of 89. Orval was a resident of rural Watonga, as well as Cottonwood Falls and Emporia, Kansas for a number of years where he farmed and ranched. He attended Hopewell Schools and Greenfield Schools, graduating at age 16,  having been promoted at an early age. During high school he excelled in FFA, being named Jr. Master Farmer and participating on the livestock judging team. Orval also attended Draughon Business School. He was a member of the
Watonga First United Methodist Church. He married Geraldine (Gerri) Gose at the Methodist Parsonage in Watonga on July 18, 1945. They had been married for 57 years before Gerri’s passing in May of 2003. He was a member of the U.S. Army, being stationed at Ft. Sherman, Texas and Ft. Wayne, Indiana. After the service he returned home to once again be the farmer and rancher he aspired to be. Orval continued to farm for as many years possible with the help of family members. He was an accomplished farmer, surviving the hard times and having many good times. Orval would tell his stories about farming and ranching to anyone who would listen! Gerri, brothers Glen Cowan, Dale Cowan and sister in law Martha Cowan, son in law Bill Bailey, and many family members on Gerri’s side. He is survived by a daughter, Shirley Bailey, six sons, Gideon Cowan, Ray Cowan, Troy (Sherry) Cowan, Craig (Marcella) Cowan, Mark Cowan, and Rodney (Carol) Cowan, 22 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and one brother in law, Kay Garriott.
Services were held November 15th, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Watonga. The Reverend David Johnson officiated. Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery, Watonga. Wilkinson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, or the charity of choice.
