Robert James "Bob" Gauer

1934~2016

Robert James "Bob" Gauer, age 82, of Watonga, OK, passed away Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, in Watonga. He was born Dec. 3,1934, at home northeast of Crawford, TX, to Willie Gauer and Frieda E. (Massier) Gauer. He graduated from Crawford High School in 1953. He graduated from Baylor University, Waco, TX, in Aug., 1958. He was serving his first pastorate at the Little Deer Creek Baptist Church of Chilton, TX, having been ordained in July of 1958. Robert had married Betty Sue (Burns) Gauer April 13,1956, and their second daughter was born the day before their graduation. He also attended Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. He also pastored churches at Morton, Turkey, Ballinger, Eola, Water Valley, Millersview (twice), Melvin (twice), Doole and Brady, most of them as a bi-vocational pastor. He also served twenty-four years in the Religion Department of the San Angelo State School in Carlsbad, TX, under the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, as chaplain and the last five years as head of the department. He loved his work with the residents there. Bob played baseball, and coached the Carlsbad Little League team. He enjoyed walking, and playing bridge, dominoes and spades. In San Angelo he served on the board of the state school credit union, and after retirement, on the Volunteer Council. In San Antonio and Brady he was on the boards of the senior citizens centers. And after moving to Watonga, he served on the City Council. A memorial service for Robert James "Bob" Gauer will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the First Baptist Church of Watonga. Bob is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Sue (Burns) Gauer of Watonga, two daughters, Elizabeth Renee Graham and husband, David, of Sugar Land,TX, and Barbara Kathleen Kress and husband Ian, of Nassau Bay, TX; two sons, Robert James, Jr. and wife Kim of San Antonio, TX, and William Keith "Bill" and wife Jennifer, of Watonga, OK; six grandchildren, Amber Wilhite and husband Wayne, Jr., of Warner Robins, GA, Monica Gauer of Bronte, TX, Derrick Gauer of Braselton, GA, James Graham of Sugar Land, TX, and Claire Gauer and Allison Gauer of Watonga, OK; and four great-grandchildren, Serene Blache, Eric Wilhite, Melvin Stockman and Gavin Wilhite; his sister-in law Charlene Gauer of Midway, TX, his brother Charles and wife Carol of Waco, TX, and his sister Rita Nehring of Robinson, TX; his nephews and nieces and families, and many cousins and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, Wilburn Ray Gauer, and his brother-in-law, Layton Nehring.
