An anonymous donor has lifted a huge burden off struggling Watonga parents.

Lori Graham, principal of Watonga Elementary, said a donor who wished to remain anonymous ponied up $4,000 for school supplies for elementary students. That amount was matched from school fundraiser incomes, especially popcorn and pickles and the lunchtime healthy frosty fundraisers.

Graham said she was heartbroken by images of Oklahomans on the news waiting in line for help with their unemployment claims. Then the donation arrived and the answer was provided.

“This is one way we can help families that are struggling,” she said.

Local business SPC also helped tremendously, Graham said. “They gave us some killer deals, really great price breaks,” she said.

The supplies are everything for all students from Pre-K through fifth grade, except a backpack for each child and a box in which to keep their supplies. Parents can see teachers’ supply lists for size and type suggestions on the boxes.

In addition, Carla Flynn has donated hand sanitizer and the United Methodist Church has also donated supplies.

“If parents really want to help, they can donate packages of bottled water,” Graham said. The individual bottles will eliminate the need for children to use the water fountains and perhaps spread illnesses.

For more information you may check with the school or ask questions during registration.
