This is not an easy time to be a parent. Not that there is an easy time to be a parent, but this borders on the absurd.

Administrators and health care advocates have weighed in on how to start school safely for both students and staff. Fast paced updates in technology were necessary for some districts and students.

Parents have had to do the best they could to decide whether it was better to send youngsters to brick and mortar buildings where they could be exposed to the Corona virus, or keep them home and hope their education and socialization does not suffer. Parents had to decide if they had the connectivity to school virtually or the ability, patience and determination to homeschool without virtual backup.

There are some parents who wonder if the kids are at home, can they feed them properly when they had relied on school meals to bridge the gap between their income and food insecurity. Even grab and go meals offered at school sites can be a little sticky if the family automobile is short on fuel.

Students, too, are faced with uncertainty when for some of them, school is the only stability in their lives, young lives impacted by broken families, drug use and incarceration. School is their safe place and now that is in question every week the pandemic continues.

So the best thing anyone can do is show support for the schools, students and parents. Let them know you understand how difficult the decision is, no matter what it is. Let schoolteachers and administrators – some of whom have health care concerns themselves – know that we appreciate what they do and the difficult decisions they make every day, now more than ever.
