This year Father’s Day is on June 21. It is the day to recognize and give a special thanks to your dad.

The history of Father’s Day goes back to 1908 when a church in West Virginia held a sermon to honor 362 men who were killed the previous year in a coal mining explosion. This was the country’s first-ever event to strictly honor fathers, but it was just a one-and-done thing.

Father's Day turned into a national holiday in the United States in 1972, when it was recognized by President Richard Nixon, six years after previous President Lyndon B. Johnson gave the primary Presidential Father's Day Proclamation in 1966. Johnson proclaiming the third Sunday in June a committed day to honor fathers. For almost 50 years, we have officially commended the dads and father-like figures in our lives, buying grill, adorned welcome cards and the most recent angling gear without the slightest hesitation.

Now that you know the history of Father’s Day, you are probably wondering what to get your dad to celebrate. Locally, available options are hardware, tools, fishing equipment and hunting gear for Father’s Day.

Think about his favorite things to eat and the ways he spends his coveted down time. A gift that celebrates the things that matter most to him is sure to earn dad’s gratitude. A Father’s Day isn’t complete until you fire up the grill, but flame-kissed steaks like Dry-Brined New York Strips with Grilled Brown Butter Balsamic Onions are just the start to an unforgettable meal that celebrates all the best of the season.
