Art collectors with a discerning eye and an interest in Native American art have a stunning opportunity this weekend.

The event is an estate sale for the Justice family of Watonga. Included are 20 sculptures by renowned Native artist Harvey Russell Jr., who signs his works ‘Bearshield.’

Russell is the firstborn son of a Cheyenne chief. Although he was brought up in Oklahoma, he trained as an artist at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, encouraged to attend the New Mexico school by a teacher who saw his tremendous talent. After completion of his schooling he studied in Santa Fe and Taos with various artists before his return to Oklahoma. Some of his pieces are on display at the Institute and in galleries throughout the Southwest.

His upbringing was steeped in the Cheyenne culture which is spotlighted in his sculptures, where he incorporates symbols from the Native American Church and Cheyenne ceremony. Melton’s Art Reference noted the smooth flowing lines of the works, which lend an aura of dignity and serenity to his sculptures. His status in among tribal members is based on his art and his religious understanding. He is a Cheyenne Headsman, member of the Bowstring Society and a priest of the Cheyenne Sundance.

The sculptures were purchased by the Justices directly from Russell throughout the years. Some are large pieces while others are diminutive.

“It is really unusual to see a collection this large from a single artist,” said Rebecca Johnston, a principal of Swan Estate Sales, the company holding the event. “This is exceptional. Exceptional doesn’t come along that often.”

Currently there is at least one piece of sculpture attributed to Russell for sale on an internet auction website where the bid was at $895 as of press time. Others have sold at public sales anywhere from $900 to nearly $2,000. Johnston said the Justice pieces are ‘reasonably priced’ but added that those who are interested should be ready to make a decision as soon as the sale opens.

The sale will take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 27- 28 at 515 Chisolm Trail, Watonga. The items are posted online at https://www.estatesales.net/OK/Watonga/73772/2563872. Johnston said the company sells a good deal of art and is well equipped to take payment over the phone or online and ship items wherever the buyer desires. She can be reached at (918) 864-6541
