It should not come as a surprise to residents that the Watonga School District already has implemented a plan to fight flu season, and that same plan can be fleshed out to combat viruses as well.

Superintendent Mark Batt notified the board March 9 that the district was following guidelines from the Oklahoma State Department of Health to protect students, staff and teachers from the COVID-19, or coronavirus. That includes keeping the building supplied with hand sanitizer, keeping up with health advisories and warnings, and utilizing the Clorox 360 machine.

The machine was purchased last year and works as a type of fogger. There are differences, though. The spray dispersed from the machine is thicker and adheres to more surfaces than a standard spray. It will even cling to the underside of tables, chairs and shelving.

In response to a request from board member Aaron Clewell, the district will institute a rotating schedule so that the machine is used in all rooms of all buildings at least once a week. Batt said if there proved to be a conflict in scheduling, the district could look at purchasing a second machine so there is one at each campus. Most of the Clorox products are labeled to indicate they kill cold and flu viruses and are on the list issued by the Centers for Disease Control of products known to help contain the Coronavirus.
