GEARY – The City of Geary is seeking donations to help it complete a new animal shelter that it hopes will help reduce the stray animal population and reunite pets with their owners.
The partially completed shelter is located across the street from the city’s wastewater treatment plant in northeast Geary. Its construction has thus far been financed through a private foundation, but city officials say the structure will need a little more investment to get it operational.
Mayor Bobby Allen said the shelter still needs to be wired, plumbed, fenced and painted, and estimates the remaining cost to be about $15,000 to $20,000.
Once complete, Allen said the shelter will house up to seven dogs and a few smaller animals like cats, too. “We never have had more than seven at any given time,” he said.
The city has not had an animal control officer in about a year, but may choose to hire one as the shelter becomes operational. Previously, animals caught in Geary had to be housed in other towns.
“It really looks good, what we’ve got done,” Allen said. “It looks great. It’s just the finishing touch on it, we’ve got to get finished up.”
Those interested in donating toward the Geary animal shelter can contact City Hall at 115 S. Broadway or 405- 884-5466. They can also reach out to the Geary Police Department at 129 NW 5th St. or 405-884-2167.
