WATONGA – A fundraiser for the upcoming Watonga prom could have a commode creeping into your front yard.
The “Flushed Away” fundraiser has toilets popping up around town for a good cause. When the toilet appears, the homeowners must chip in to have it relocated.
They can pay $10 to have the toilet removed, $25 to “flush” a friend or $50 as “insurance” to make sure the toilet never reappears in their yards. All proceeds go to the Watonga junior class, which puts on the prom.
So far toilet targets have included Superintendent Kyle Hilterbran and district principals and coaches.
“We actually had some fun with this Sunday evening,” said organizer Kristi Hock. “Some of the coaches were pranking each other, and they each bought ‘toilet insurance’ and kept wanting to send it back to the other coach’s yard. It got quite humorous for the kids, so that was a little bit of fun.”
Students are the ones responsible for toilet transportation, Hock explained, saying the fundraiser is a fun, new way to benefit the prom and get the kids more involved. As of Tuesday, “Flushed Away” has raised nearly $700 in less than a week.
“We’ve had good feedback from the community,” Hock said. “They think it’s fun, and have enjoyed it as well. … We think it’s been pretty successful.”
For those who aren’t “flushed,” or who want to help some other way, the junior class is also accepting donations. Those interested can donate to Hock or Amy Estep, to a junior class member, at Cornerstone Bank, or on Cash App. The fundraiser’s Cash App handle is $watongaprom22.
This year’s prom will be held April 23 at the new Lucky Star event center.
