Watonga Public Schools are set for the first day of the new year on Thursday, Aug. 11 and an Open House is scheduled for next Tuesday, Aug. 9.

School Superintendent Kyle Hilterbran said the elementary school begins classes at 8 a.m. and gets out at 3:20 p.m. and the middle school and high school start at 8:10 a.m. and are out at 3:10 p.m.

Hilterbran, in his second year as Watonga superintendent, stated the open house for high school and middle school students next Tuesday is from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and for the elementary level is from 5-7 p.m.

"We expect a total of about 725 students from Pre-K through 12th grade," he noted.

Hilterbran said several new teachers and staff have been hired beginning this school year. They include three teachers at the high school, one at the middle school, four at the elementary, two Aides and a custodian.

"Softball practice and cross-country practice have already started," he said, "with football practice beginning next Monday, Aug. 8."

A Media Day for softball, cross country and band is scheduled for this Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m., Hilterbran said.

The Media Day for football and cheer "Meet the Eagles," will be held Tuesday evening, Aug. 16, beginning at 7 p.m., he stated

Ṡome additions to the facilities include "a new teachers' parking lot and an addition to the south playground at the elementary school," Hilterbran added.

With passage of a bond issue, he indicated it's hoped that construction of a new cafeteria can begin as early as October and a new Scoreboard will go up in September, he said.

"Later in the school year, we'll start our new gymnasium and concession and bathroom facility in the end zone," Hilterbran explained.
