We as Americans like to think we can control things. Part of the upset over this virus sweeping the nation and our state is that there is little we can do to control anything about it.

Sure, we can isolate ourselves, wash our hands, do our best to stay well with strong immune systems. We can be socially responsible. And not much else except wait.

So we are frustrated and scared and bored. That can be a virulent combination on its own and it can lead to striking out. We’ve all seen some of it on social media.

People who do condemn the leaders of the nation, state and communities have legitimate fears. Those fears are not to be made light of, and those who voice dissatisfaction are not to be dismissed or made fun of. What I would like to know,

What I would like to know, asking respectfully and sincerely, is what do those in full voice over the response want to see happen? Is there something specific we can take to the leaders of the county or town or region so that it can be addressed? Maybe it is as reassuring as

Maybe it is as reassuring as restocking the store shelves. Perhaps these individuals want to see all out-of-town traffic stopped. Some ideas will work, while others not so much.

What I am suggesting is that rather than the broad brush complaint of ‘They aren’t doing anything,’ come up with specific requests like ‘I wish there were more bottled water available.’ And let’s keep it civil. This

And let’s keep it civil. This pandemic isn’t the fault of any of our leaders, or our neighbors. At the end of the day, the only thing we can control is our response to this situation. Instead of our response being to rip the head off the person who answers the phone at city hall, maybe we can take a deep breath and have a measured, civil response. And it might help all of us feel a little more in control of our lives, if only for a little while.
