The Geary Schools decided this week that all students will be in distance learning effective immediately and lasting through the end of the year.

“As you likely know, our community is experiencing an increased number of COVID-19 cases,” Geary Schools Superintendent Todd Glasgow said in a message on the district’s Facebook page. “After discussing the situation with local health officials, our school board and administration team, we have made the difficult decision to transition all district students to distance learning for three weeks in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus.”

Students are expected back in the classroom when school resumes on Jan. 4, 2021.

“Our team has worked hard to prepare for this situation,” Glasgow wrote.

Students will follow their distance learning scheduled posted on the website and social media pages for their site. They will use Chromebooks and iPads to do their assignments, according to the message.

If there are students who still don’t have access to technology or the internet, they need to call their principal.

The district still will provide meals for all students 18 and under in the district. Parents and students may pick up meals for the week at their respective school sites on Dec. 7 and Dec. 14.

As COVID-19 continues to spread across the state and in the city and county, Glasgow urges families to remain vigilant in the fight against the virus. If someone in a student’s family tests positive, the need to call the school immediately.

“There is nothing more important to our district than the safety and health of our students, staff and families,” Glasgow wrote. “We understand this sudden transition will be inconvenient and your child will miss being in school; however, we greatly appreciate your families’ flexibility, patience and support.”

Students or parents with questions can contact their principal for more information.
