A Lamp to My Feet

In our last article, we learned about the prophet Hosea and his wife Gomer who was a prostitute. God used this relationship to show how his people were treating Him. They were not being faithful to Him. They were continually turning their backs on Him and chasing after other gods or possessions.

In chapter 2, Gomer chooses to desert Hosea and go after her lovers (2:5). She is used and abused and then cast aside by them. God tells Hosea in chapter 3 to go get Gomer and bring her back home. He buys her back for the price of a common slave. In this way, God is showing His people how they have treated Him and how, He will take them back to love and protect them. All He requires is their faithful obedience.

Hosea 4:6 speaks to all generations of God’s people: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, because you have rejected knowledge from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.” The other day I heard that for the first time in American history, less than 50% of our population professes Christianity. Folks, our country should be on his knees to voice his repentance and beg for God’s forgiveness. What does God tell us to do: 2Chronicles 7:14, “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
