A Lamp to My Feet

My daughter died August 24, last Tuesday evening. I want to thank all of you for your prayers on behalf of my daughter and all of our family. Please continue to pray for us as we go through the grieving process.

We now come to the book of Jonah. Those of us who attended Bible class as children probably remember the story of Jonah. The book begins with God calling Jonah to go to Nineveh, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” God always knows what we are doing. We sing a hymn that says, “There an all seeing eye watching you.” You can’t hide anything from God.

Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian Empire. They were a very cruel people and committed many atrocious acts in their war fare. They were one of the enemies of Israel, so what did Jonah do? He tries to run away from God. He goes in the opposite direction. He gets into a boat and sails for what is now Spain.

Folks, we cannot run away from God. Psalm 139:712 tells us, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,”even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.”
