U.S. Senator James Lankford, a Republican from Edmond, came to Watonga Thursday to speak to juniors and seniors at the high school.

Although Lankford spoke with the students for about 45 minutes, his emphasis was on the idea that anyone can become a public servant, even though they do not have a political family background. He pointed out that his own background was not political until he felt the calling to enter his first race for the Senate.

Students spent a good deal of the time asking questions about his past, such as whether he played an instrument in school (yes, drums) how he got elected (drumming up votes in the food court at OKC malls) and the worst part of living parttime in Washington, D.C. (leaving his wife and family every week) Lankford was also treated to a quick view of the school’s newly refurbished hallways, repaired after a broken pipe flooded the facility, and the jumbotron screen that was being installed the day of his visit.

Oddly enough, Lankford never once mentioned the upcoming election, even though some of the students are likely old enough to vote on Nov. 8.
