Watonga schools have now fully implemented a distance learning program. We had over 90% of our elementary students pick up packets last week while middle and high school students have utilized the internet to continue their education. All of our teachers have made themselves available to students and parents virtually to assist and support.

Successful implementation would not be possible without our parents, teachers and principals. It says something about a community when that number of parents line up to receive their child’s packet of instruction to continue and enhance learning. Our teachers have gone above and beyond to totally reinvent their teaching methods and keep students engaged. The principals sacrificed their spring break plans with family to develop a plan for implementation. Nothing would have been successful without all of these elements coming together.

The student lunch program has been a great success. We will continue serving lunches in this format until May 8. In the chaos of all of this hitting us, the child nutrition staff really stepped up. They jumped into action immediately to make sure that all children were fed. Their smiles and attitudes as they deliver food to the cars is contagious. I know they are making a positive difference in these trying times.

We have a graduation plan that we hope will be special for our senior class. We are contacting the seniors to set up picture times and scheduling other events. Any 2020 graduate that has not been contacted after this week please reach out to a teacher or administrator.

Ṫhe intent of the teacher parade was to bring joy to as many students and parents as possible. Mrs. Graham and the staff put a lot of effort into trying to put a smile on the faces of our students and the community. It wouldn't have been possible without the Watonga police and fire departments. Their enthusiastic support every time we ask is a blessing.

This month is school board appreciation month. The job of a school board member is a thankless one. Most of their contributions go unnoticed. They have played a major role in making sure that our employees did not suffer wage losses and that our students continue to be fed and educated through this unbelievable event. Please show your appreciation to their dedication when you see them.

All of us can take great comfort knowing that we live in a great community with many folks willing to do whatever it takes to overcome any challenge.

Keep you and yours safe and healthy.
