Watonga Yard Pride Contest Announced

The American Legion Post 125 of Watonga is sponsoring a ‘Pride in Watonga Yard Recognition,’ to encourage citizens to upgrade lawns and flowerbeds.

Starting June 5, the yard judges will complete trips up and down Watonga streets. They will select five winners in the five districts defined as: (1) west of Hwy. 8, (2) north of 11th Street, (3) east of Forest Ave., (4) south of Third Street and (5) north of 3rd , east of Hwy 8, south of 11th Street and west of Forest Ave.

Judging will take place the first Friday/Saturday of July and August. In all, 15 winners will be announced. They will receive gift certificates from sponsoring stores.

To nominate a yard, whether your own or your friend/neighbor’s yard, call 580-623-5017 and provide the name and address to be judged. This will guarantee the judges will consider that location.

Points will be awarded for: neat and trim yards with sufficient landscaping, colorful flower beds, and a variety of plants, shrubbery and trees.

This competition strives to call attention to the value citizens place on well-kept yards. The local American Legion Post would like the neighborhoods to be attractive, both for residents and traveling guests.

Legion Commander Neal Riley said Legion members realize that ‘Pride in Watonga’ begins at home with a progressive town that values its attractiveness.
