After going to the patrons of the school district and obtaining a $19 million bond issue, the Watonga School district has broken ground on the new gym and end zone facility for the high school. Various members of the public, the builders, city government and the school board came out on a damp chilly March day to hold the official groundbreaking, even though the dozers and end loaders have already been at work.

Geary Board Makes Hires

The Geary School Board had an optimistic report when it met in regular session March 3. The elementary school principal, Joy Osborne told the board members that at the beginning of the school year when students took a test to set baseline skills in reading, 64% of elementary students were reading below grade level.

State Nips Recreational in the Bud

Oklahomans turned out in low numbers – only 25.3 % of those eligible to vote did so to vote on State Question 820, legalizing recreational marijuana. The journey to the vote was a circuitous one, with the question missing deadlines for inclusion in regular elections and being forced by the calendar into a special election where it was the solitary item.
