Jonathon DeJesus, a Blaine County deputy who serves as the school resource officer at Geary, is more used to giving help than asking for it.
But he is asking the community for its support now as he seeks funding for a K9 crisis partner.
Through Shepherd’s Paw, an animal rescue organization, and Heroes with Hope of Southern Oklahoma, a poodle mix named Tobey has come available, but not without a cost.
DeJesus is hoping to raise a minimum of $3,000 to secure the dog, cover the training costs and begin familiarizing the pup with Geary Schools and begin training the officer as his handler.
Studies have shown that dogs can help students manage anxiety, stress and other emotions associated with school and or trauma. They can also provide emotional support and comfort to students who may feel isolated and assist those with communication challenges in a low pressure way, such as reading to the animal. A dog may also make schools, hallways and classrooms feel more welcoming to students.
