Students Input Vital to 2020 Graduation Plans

When the Coronavirus pandemic forced closure of schools statewide, the staff at Watonga High School began looking for ways to create a safe but meaningful graduation experience for its seniors.

“It was of paramount importance to us that we provide a ceremony that will be memorable for our seniors and their families,” wrote principal David Lorenz.

The 2020 ceremony is set for 10 a.m. May 16. The administration thought it had the details in place, but determined they wanted to create something that better reflects the desires of the students for their special day.

In order to do that, the school will send out an email survey and also an all-call to seniors this week. That survey will outline several options for graduation and ask the seniors to give their opinions on the options. They must return the surveys as soon as possible so that the selected options can be put into motion and meet the date constrictions.

Likewise, no definitive plans have been released for seniors at Geary High School, although Superintendent Todd Glasgow said there were one or more plans on the table. The date, May 16 will remain the same, but plans remain in flux as the school works within the guidelines set by the state as to what is permissible by that time. Glasgow said they district is remaining flexible so that it can provide as close to the traditional ceremony as possible, given the existing constraints.
