Theta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International received word that two of their chapter essay winners have placed second in the Oklahoma Organization of DKG.
The seventh grade second place winner was Katie Myers, Lomega Public School and her teacher was Whitney Hauser. The second-place winner for the eighth grade was Afton Shirley from Okarche Public School and his teacher is Lyndal Westmoreland.
The theme was “In the Spirit of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics-Transforming the World.” Cosette Wymer, Fairview is the chair and Theta members serving on that committee were Dana Terrell, Kingfisher and Ann Ritchie, Enid. Due to Covid-19 the OSO State Convention has been cancelled in June and another date may be selected to honor these winners. If another date is selected, they will be invited to read their essays.
Due to the local chapter not being able to host a reception the six students received a monetary donation and a certificate.
The April Theta project was to bring items for the Kingfisher County Sheriff Department and the Blaine County Sheriff Departments as we have members living in those counties. Due to us not being able to hold our business meeting the members voted to give a donation to each of the departments for use in the need of those incarcerated especially women.
This project was a part of their November meeting in which Harri Williams discussed “Interrupting the School to Prison Pipeline and Mass Incarceration” and as a part of the Annie Award, a program to recognize an outstanding program in the areas of community service or educational issues. Members will present the checks to the departments once we are able to resume our daily lives.
Installations of new officers will take place when we meet again in the fall. The officers will assume their positions on July 1.
