It’s been a quiet week at the museum with no visitors. I guess it’s been too hot

Ṫhe City of Watonga is going to have a celebration at the Huff Lorang Park on 4th of July. There will be games for the kids and hamburgers and hot dogs. Later that night there will be a fireworks display. Try to attend this and show the ones giving of their time support.

We have a picture of the front of two businesses. It kind of looks like it is where the Antique Store on Main Street is. Both store fronts look the same. The left side storefront has a sign that says Tyler & Cronkite and the other one says Perris & King. They both have horse hitching rails out front. I can’t tell by looking through the windows what they sold. One does have a wagon out front; don’t know if it’s for sale or if it belongs to a customer. It looks like there is still a dirt street with weeds growing up next to the building. There are no buildings on either side. There’s a staircase going up by the one on the right side.

In her book They Carried the Torch, Mrs. Ferguson writes that there was confusion about whether a probate judge could grant a divorce. When it was straightened out by the legislature and Oklahoma Supreme Court, some people had divorced and remarried. So then there was confusion as to whether they were legally divorced and if their new marriage was legal. She tells of a couple on a homestead and they wanted the claim next to theirs. So they decided to divorce and remarry after she filed the claim. Even though it was easy to get a divorce the judge insisted they needed more grounds for the divorce than what the man and wife agreed upon. “The man said she was a dirty housekeeper, rotten cook, and had a bad disposition”. That made her so mad she didn’t remarry him and later married someone else. He lost his wife and the land.

The next Trades Day is July 9, 2022, 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Bring your new or vintage items. They don’t have to be antique, just something someone else can use. Please let us know if you are planning on bringing anything so we can reserve you a spot. We would like this to grow and be something good for the community. Our next two events are the Tea August 14, 2022, at the Christian Church and Music Under the Stars, September 9, 2022, at the Ferguson Home Museum. More details to follow.

Any one that wants to become a member of Friends of Ferguson Home is welcome. You don’t have to be a member to volunteer. I had a lady email me this week and ask where we can use man power.
