A Bubble Off Plumb

In this job I always have regrets, usually about something I didn’t do.

Some are short term regrets, like I wish I had jumped into the hole with the broken water main last week – or at least waddled over to the site of the action and taken a photo of the work going on.

Some are ongoing regrets, like I wish I were a better sports photographer and writer. That is unlikely to change because I just don’t understand sports, or the lingo. I count it a good night on the sidelines or courtside if I don’t get wiped out by an oncoming athlete. Even if I do, it’s all a day at the office, part of the job, as long as no bones or cameras are broken.

But then there are deep regrets that I can do nothing to remedy, and I also face those regularly.

This year I have not made it to a single Geary Bison football game. Those players have had an outstanding season and are playoff bound.

I should have made it a point to be there at least once. Now it is too late for this year unless I travel to a playoff game.

The same is true for Calumet fall baseball. Not. One. Single. Game. That team was the state runner up. Shame on me.

So how do I fix it? I could promise tearfully to do better, to attend all the games and jump in the hole with water breaks on a regular basis. That would be disingenuous, like a New Year’s resolution.

There are not enough hours in the week to get to every event and meeting I ‘should’ attend. There is not enough of me to get to all those places and not lose my mind. And let’s face it, I am not getting any younger. Maybe I could have when I was cub reporter, still losing my notepads from time to time, but probably not.

But here is what I can do. I can do more to reach out to coaches, players, parents and administrators at the schools. I can look harder for the photos and information that is definitely out there. So here is my plea. If you have those great photos and feel like sharing, let us know. We’d be pleased and proud to use them to showcase your team, school, kids.

This isn’t just about the sports side, either. Every week there are goings-on at the schools, awards and events and competitions. Let us know, and we will let everyone know. And thanks for your help.
