The Plains Collective, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Native culture, is proud to announce the Indigenous Arts Festival, presented in partnership with the long-standing Watonga Cheese Festival. This historic collaboration will bring together two vibrant traditions—one rooted in local community heritage, the other in the living culture of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes—for a weekend of unity, creativity, and celebration. Over the course of two days, visitors will experience the richness of Native artistry through exhibitions by renowned Indigenous artists, cultural displays at Roman Nose State Park, and a spectacular fashion show featuring Native designers. A Collaboration Powwow will fill the air with music and movement, while food demonstrations and the frybread contest allow festivalgoers to taste tradition alongside Watonga’s famous cheese.
In addition to cultural highlights, the festival will include a parade, quilt and art shows, youth activities, and community events such as the Great Rat Race, Pedal Tractor Pull and a fall festival rodeo. Together, these diverse activities weave a tapestry of shared experiences— bridging Native and non-Native traditions in a way that celebrates both individuality and community.
“This festival is about

more than entertainment— it’s about connection,” said Ramona Tall Bear, board member and event coordinator. “By bringing together Indigenous art, history, and food with longstanding local traditions, we are creating a space where everyone can celebrate together, learn from one another, and strengthen the bonds of community.”
The Indigenous Arts Festival is made possible by the Plains Collective, with the support of Tribal programs, local businesses, and dedicated volunteers. Admission to many events is free, with art vendors, food trucks, and family activities ensuring there is something for everyone.
Join us in Watonga on October 10–11 for this one-of-a-kind celebration of culture, creativity and community spirit.
