Edward W. Lewis, 91, died Thursday, August 5, 2021 at The Ranch House in Garden City, Kansas. He was born June 16, 1930 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma the son of Woolsie & Mary (Weldon) Lewis.

Ed grew up on a farm near Greenfield, Oklahoma, where he attended schools and graduated from Greenfield High School as Salutatorian. He attended and graduated from Garden City Junior College where he took his first accounting classes, taught by his later business partner Ed Hooper Ed then attended and graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in accounting. On January 25, 1952, he married Nelda Yancey in Stillwater, Oklahoma. They moved to Garden City in 1953 where they have lived since. Ed began his career, farming in Garden City. Two years later, he opened an accounting office as a way of supplementing his farm income. Ed was the first and for several years the only CPA in Garden City. A few years later, Ed Hooper joined Ed with the accounting firm. In 1972, Phil Dick became a partner, giving the firm its present name of Lewis, Hooper & Dick. After 40 years as a CPA, Ed retired in 1995.

Ed fervently believed in civic engagement and helping those less fortunate. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Garden City where he served as church treasurer for many years. He was also a member and strong supporter of the Garden City Family YMCA and Rotary International. In retirement he was involved in Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Habitat for Humanity. He was also a proud, long-time, card-carrying member of The Wisdom Table at Traditions, founded in 1942, ten years before he arrived in town.

In retirement, Ed and Nelda took several trips to foreign lands, especially enjoying trips that involved biking and hiking. Ed loved playing racquetball and was a regular on the YMCA courts. He competed on Senior Olympics circuit well into his 70's.

Survivors include his wife Nelda Lewis of the home; three children Sonia & husband Ole Anderson of Sheridan, Wyoming, Bob Lewis of Garden City, Kansas, and Doug & wife Michelle Lewis of New Braunfels, Texas; six grandchildren Ben & wife Jami Anderson of Davidson, North Carolina, Chuck & wife Kristin Anderson of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Chelsey & husband Javier Rangel of Denver, Colorado, Adam Lewis of Austin, Texas, Noah Lewis of Austin, Texas, and Hannah Lewis of New Braunfels, Texas; and six great-grandchildren. Ed is preceded in death by his parents; a son Randy Lewis; and a brother William Lane Lewis.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City with Rev. Joel Plisek officiating. The service may also be viewed on Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in garden City. There will be no calling hours. The family suggests memorials given to the First United Methodist Church, the Garden City Family YMCA, or the Alzheimer’s Association, all in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
