In Loving Memory... Marvin Daugherty

Marvin Daugherty died Monday, December 4, 2023. He was born on his parent’s farm in Blaine County on March 18, 1937. Their home was ten miles southeast of Watonga, Oklahoma. Marvin was the second son of Melvin and Berndeam Daugherty. Marvin had an older brother named Gerald. Marvin lost his father when he was only three years old. His mother continued with the farming and also worked in town. She later married Robert Huff who became Marvin's stepfather. Marvin began his schooling in a one-room schoolhouse that was six miles southeast of Watonga. His first teacher was Hulda Hursh. The school was called Cordell and he attended seven years of schooling there before transferring to Watonga Public School. Marvin was really into sports, so he came to Watonga early to play football. While in high school, he played all four sports that were offered in school, football, baseball, basketball, and track. Marvin’s senior year he was voted by his coaches as “outstanding athlete” of Watonga High School. Marvin’s mother was the only one of her siblings to graduate from high school, and as a result she was strong on education. Her dream was for her children to attain the highest possible educational level. When Marvin graduated from high school, he worked at Roman Nose State Park building the lodge. Then he entered Southwestern Oklahoma State College in the fall of 1955. He was awarded a partial football scholarship and given a job working at Shott’s Ford Motor Company in Weatherford, Oklahoma. He was also a member of the National Guard to help pay for his college. He completed graduation requirements at midterm in December of 1958 and then went back to Southwestern to go through the graduation exercises in May of 1959. Marvin’s first teaching job consisted of teaching industrial arts, driver’s education, football, basketball, and track. He started as an assistant coach then moved up to head coach after three years. He taught in Erick for six and a half years. From Erick, Marvin went to Canton as head football coach and teacher of driver’s education and industrial arts. After coaching for several years, he became high school principal and remained in that position for three years. In the process, he earned a master’s degree in School Administration. In 1972 Marvin ran for County Superintendent of Blaine County and was elected. His term started in 1973. He remained in county government for twenty-three years. Marvin served as President of the State County Superintendent’s Association twice and was honored by his peers as their most valuable member. He retired after being involved in education for thirty-four years. Marvin has been associated with several civic organizations through the years. While at Erick he was a member of the Kiwanis and the Beckham County School Master’s Association. While at Canton he served as President of the Lions club for two terms. He was also a member of the Blaine County School Master’s Association. Marvin also served as a deacon and elder in the First Christian Church in Canton. After moving to Watonga, he served as President of the Watonga Lions Club. Marvin was very proud that he was one of the primary Lion members to honor the Watonga students with highest academic achievement. The Watonga Academic Banquet has been honoring students for many years. Marvin met his wife, Marilyn, in education. She was also a teacher. After their retirement they moved to Mustang, Oklahoma, to be near their children and grandchildren. They liked to travel and visited all fifty states, some several times. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, his grandson Derek Daugherty Sharp, his parents, his stepfather, and his three siblings, Gerald Daugherty, Robert Huff and Joy Whitehead Phillips. Marvin is survived by his children; Ty Daugherty, Greg Ryan, Pam Daugherty-Sharp and husband Keith, Cindy Humphrey and husband Todd, eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cookson Hills Children’s Home. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, December 8, 2023 at McNeil’s Funeral Service with burial at 2 p.m. at the IOOF Cemetery, Watonga, Oklahoma.
