Much has been made in the mainstream media and social media about the planned slow reopening of the state and of other states. The comments and spins put on it range from ‘it’s the greatest idea since indoor plumbing’ to ‘we’re all going to die’ and every possible stopping point in between.

No one asked my opinion, but here it is nevertheless. Use your head! If you are an older resident, you are safer at home, at least for a while longer. Do you have underlying health issues that put you at greater risk for any illness, including the Covid-19 virus? Continue to stay home until the coast is clear. You are probably already living on the safe side, shopping at specified hours and/or using delivery of food, medicine and other necessities like tacos. Keep on with what is working for you.

If you are more comfortable in your own mind telecommuting, do it as long as possible. Feel safer using a mask and wearing gloves when you go out? Go ahead. And don’t worry about others who might cast an odd glance at you for your attire. The stink-eye is far better over the edge of a mask than the standard delivery.

Don’t hesitate to step away from someone who is too close or ask them to step back if you are uncomfortable with the distancing. Most people will do that when they are out with their small children, why should this be any different? There is no shame in asking someone to respect your personal space.

Think some particular shop or store is overcrowded too much of the time? Skip it or arrange for delivery or a personal shopper and pickup.

This isn’t rocket science, folks. Do what is best for you and your family to stay safe and well. Don’t judge those around you who are or are not wearing a mask. And for goodness sake, if the stepped opening plan does or doesn’t work don’t crow about it. Nobody needs that and it isn’t helpful.

Most of all, try to remain patient while the state, county and local leaderships sort this whole thing out. No one has all the answers and everyone is just doing the best they can to return things to normal in a safe, reasonable fashion.
