As many people as there are who want to complain and blame everything that goes wrong on the city, there should be folks lined up and stacked three deep to take the open seat on city council. That seat is in Ward 2. Yet, as of Friday, there wasn’t a single person who showed any interest in the position.

I live in Ward 2, but sitting on council would be a giant conflict of interest. I’d get fired, impeached and probably run out of town on a rail. The council is considering redistricting the town, but that could take a while and meanwhile, we need council representation. So, all you fine folks who are my neighbors, give it some serious thought.

There has been no end to the bellyaching over the Cheese Festival going down to one day this year. It isn’t just us, though. That is the nationwide trend for festivals, one day, usually Saturday. I suspect it is because the vendors are working full time jobs and can only be there on weekends.

That doesn’t mean we can’t have a big blowout on our one day. It just means we have to cram all that partying, shopping, eating, parade and eating into one fun filled day. Yes, I said eating twice. I like eating, especially street food.

And one day events all over the country are still filled with vendors and visitors. It is our chance to shine and show the public all we have to be proud of and have to offer. The Zona Verde house will be completed and the second one may well have started construction. If I understand correctly, there will be a shuttle giving short tours of the town and pointing out the buildings we have that are on the National Register of Historic Places. I believe there are six with this designation.

I hope the city will put up signage on its selected location for the new drinking water treatment plant. I hope the folks who flew in for the fly in in the spring will jump in their planes and hop on over to Watonga for the day.

My wish is the Lodge at Roman Nose, the Noble House, Western and Watonga motels are filled to capacity and send all their overflow to the Lucky Star. I hope there is no place to park anywhere downtown. I hope Main Street is elbow to elbow with visitors and the vendors all sell out by dark.

Don’t forget you will be able to purchase Watonga Cheese from the Kiwanis Club and they will spend that money on children’s summer programs and scholarships for high school students.

Polish up your walking shoes, remember to save your appetite and collect all your designated gift buying money for that day. It’s going to be a great one. And who wouldn’t want to be on the city council of a town that can throw a party like that?
