The end of September has always proved to be a busy, happy, bittersweet time of year. The garden is playing out, meaning there is a lot to do putting up the bounty. Seeing those plants struggle to hang on one more day, finish producing one more tomato, is a reminder that we, too, should do our best and give our all every day.

And the produce that just can’t quite make the grade to perfection for table use still can find its place in relish or chutney, proving that we all have our place and our purpose.

Of course by the end of the day when the garden has been picked and the produce processed and put away, the house looks like a tornado has hit it, everyone is tired and hungry and grouchy. But usually we steal a few minutes in between loads of dishes and cooking supper to sit outside and admire the sun going down and the air cooling off, finally. In those moments we are each in our own way being thankful for what we have, the gifts given and the accomplishments of the day.

One day soon the last of the summer garden will make its way to the compost heap, to wither and break down, becoming nourishment for the next year, or the year after.

So too do we realize that this is only a passing snapshot of our life, and how we live. It is time, as the days cool and the leaves fall, to savor this time before it, like the summer garden, is gone. And while there will be another garden, more produce, good times and bad, these days will not come our way again. Hold them close to your heart and cherish them for the treasure they are.
