One of the hallmarks of TB Ferguson’s work as governor of the territory of Oklahoma was his work with the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature. In both the 1903 and 1905 (the legislature only met once every two years, like Texas today), one thing he insisted on was support of education, and that within a balanced budget.
In his book “ Oklahoma’s Governors, 1890-1907” LeRoy Fischer writes “Governor Ferguson, being well educated himself, was strong supporter of education of all levels in Oklahoma Territory and enthusiastically proclaimed that the ‘crowning glory of Oklahoma is her schoolwork’. In the 19011902 legislative biennium, Oklahoma Territory spent more on education than for all other purposes combined. Ferguson continued to support education costs and viewed the record $1,459, 623 expended for education in 1904 as a ‘high commentary upon the enterprise and progressive spirit of our citizens.’ Nevertheless he demanded strict accountability for all monies spent and called for high standards of administration and instruction, especially in higher education.”
Join the Friends of the Ferguson Museum on Saturday, August 19 to celebrate education in Oklahoma. At noon, we will recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The Watonga High School Band will play a few songs. There will be a drawing for two bicycles, one for a girl and one for a boy. Be sure to come by and register for the drawing. The Watonga Eagle Band will conclude with one or two songs. Then there will be some snacks, chalk art for children, and, of course, tours of the museum.
