In our last lesson I told you that Nahum is declaring the coming fall of the Assyrian Empire, of which Nineveh was the capital. They were a very violent and cruel people who ruled through fear and intimidation. In 721 BC, they defeated northern nation of Israel and put people from other countries in their places. Now, God is letting them know that their defeat and destruction is near. Nineveh falls in 612 BC
Notice what God says about them in 1:12, “Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut down and pass away.” In 1:14 God says, ”No more shall your name be perpetuated; from the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the metal image. I will make your grave, for you are vile.” In 2:13 and 3:5 God says, ”Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts.”
Our God is all powerful, all wise, and all knowing. Our God is the King of kings and LORD of lords. He raises up kingdoms, and He brings them down according to His judgment.
Folks, our nation is sick. We as a nation need to turn back to our faith in God and His standards of morality. In 2 Chronicles 7:14 God tells us how to save our nation, ”if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Our forefathers built this country on godly principles. Now, we are no longer trying to be well pleasing to God. We have become a nation of selfish ungodly people who want to please themselves and nobody else. God tells us, “Unless you turn back to me, you will be brought down.”
