Spring is in the Air

The sounds of spring are in full cacophony. The melodic sounds of birds nesting in our trees intermingle with the sounds of David operating his myriad lawn toys that exceed acceptable noise levels as far as I'm concerned, as well as the racket the boys make from sniffling, sneezing and honking into a tissue. Post-Covid we're afraid to go out in public for fear we'll be accused of being contagious. It's just allergies people!

Anyway, I'm trying to enjoy this warmer weather. I've just never been a fan of summer and as I've gotten older, I have discovered that I loathe hot weather. I don't like sweating and tanning has always been out of the question for me. Hot weather meant it was burn and peel time.

Here in good old Oklahoma spring lasts about a minute and a half. I kid you not. For example, today's predicted high is 73º then it drops into the 50s just in time for the weekend, so we're either freezing or burning up. Several years ago, we had a thermostat that would automatically keep the house at a constant temperature; the one we have now does not so I'm thankful for the ability to change temperatures with my smartphone. I fear someday soon, our system will throw up its imaginary hands and quit because of my constant changes.

One thing about living here is we learn from an early age to dress in layers. We can be freezing in the morning, burning up in the afternoon then, as soon as the sun goes down, we're freezing again. For an added bonus, we get wind. Lots of wind. I'm not talking about gentle breezes wafting over a field of sunflowers. I'm talking full-on winds most commonly associated with tornadoes. Luckily for me, with my full figure, I am well anchored so there's not much danger of blowing away.

Mother 'I can't make up my mind what season it is' Nature is having another one of her fits today. It's a throw on your thermal underwear, sweater, heavy jeans, thick socks, gloves and boots then switch to shorts and t-shirts later in the same dang day type of day. Mother Nature had better cut it out, or else! I don't know what 'or else' means, but she needs to stop it. Do you hear me, Mother Nature?

Sometimes, just for giggles, she'll lump several seasons into one day. In Oklahoma, we can have sunshine, fog, rain, snow and she might even throw in a tornado, just because she can.

Today is what I decided to call a 'half-day' – half cold, half hot. The morning required a coat and boots; in the afternoon, I had to shed the layers only to have to grab them before I went out again once the sun when down. As soon as I get inside a business establishment, I'll have a hot flash from all the layers and start peeling like I'm auditioning for the part of Gypsy Rose Lee in the movie 'Gypsy.'

With all the pollen in the air, I'm so enjoying (not) feeling dizzy with my sinuses stopped up to the hilt. It's like living on a tilt-a-whirl. I close my eyes and feel myself going round and round and round. Yesterday, I lay down on my bed, my head started spinning and the next thing I knew, I was sitting on the floor with no knowledge as to how it happened. I wish David had been videoing me so I could see it. I'm thinking it was probably quite amusing once he saw I was okay, just really confused. I wish Mother Nature would stick to fall. I like cool weather with the promise of no pollen and no allergies.

I wish she'd take a remedial course on the seasons. In case you've forgotten, Mother Nature, I'll give you a refresher.

Spring is the season after winter and before summer, in which vegetation begins to appear, in the northern hemisphere from March to May and in the southern hemisphere from September to November.

Summer is the warmest season of the year. It is from June to August in the northern hemisphere and from December to February in the southern hemisphere.

Fall is the third season of the year, when crops and fruits are gathered, and leaves fall in the northern hemisphere from September to November and in the southern hemisphere from March to May.

Winter is the coldest season of the year, in the northern hemisphere from December to February and in the southern hemisphere from June to August.

My head is pounding, I'm dizzier more than I usually am (I heard that), and my allergies are confused enough and I'm finding it hard to think so please, Mother Nature, stop mixing up the seasons.
