2026 marks my 12th and final year in the State Senate, and after working and voting on the state budget every year since 2014, I can say that I have truly seen it all. I’ve seen our state in extreme budget shortfalls, and I’ve seen our state with record amounts in savings.

I did a very silly thing last fall. On a trip to a farm supply store in a nearby town, I looked into the chick bins. Of course, you know what happened. I came home with 10 pullets. There weren’t enough of a single breed to get 10, so I wound up with eight Red Rangers and two Sapphire Gems.

So, it is officially election season. The special election for the bond issue at Geary and the school board at Canton was Tuesday. Filing was last week for other offices from governor on down.Already vacant lots and highways and byways are filling up with the familiar ‘Vote for Joe’ signs.

Well, it seems some people are ready to burn me at the stake because I printed graphic material about a child abuse case and that may have caused the victim more damage or could cause other victims not to report crimes because it might be in the newspaper.That may all be true.
