Body

Watonga Eagles track team traveled May 5-6 to Western Heights in Oklahoma City to compete in the class 2A regional championship. The Lady Eagles track team was recognized as Academic State Champions.

The men’s team placed fourth overall in class 2A. Brayden Cowan, a freshman, brought home the state championship title in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:31. He also placed third in the 800 meter run with a personal record time of 1:57. Cowan ran anchor leg on the 4x800 meter relay, along with freshmen Angel Pena Roque, Boomer Mendenhall and senior Nicholas Walker. The team crossed the finish in second place to receive the state runnerup medal.

The men’s 4x400 meter relay finished in fifth place to take a spot on the podium. That team consisted of Pena Roque, Aajhay Johnson, a sophomore, Cowan and Tristan Dobbin,s a freshman.

Senior Kale Smith earned a spot on the podium with sixth place in the shot put. As a first-year pole vaulter, sophomore Dakota Cox placed seventh and earned team points.

In addition to academic state champions, Reese Coleman, a sophomore, brought home a thirdplace medal in the 3200meter run and eighth place in the 1600-meter run. In pole vault, Carson Reyburn placed fifth. Josey Rinehart also made the podium with sixth place in the discuss.

Also competing at the state tournament were the men’s 4x200 meter relay team, consisting of Walker, Johnson, Dobbins and Chris Sanders. Walker also competed in the high jump.

Women’s 4x100 meter relay team made up of Jayden Daukei, Piper Gallagher, Sydnee Lake and Carson Reyburn also competed.

Women’s 4x200 meter relay team of Daukei, Gallagher, Lake and Shelby Miller ran as well. Competing in the women’s shot put were Miller and Rinehart. Natalie Walker also competed in the 400-meter run and high jump.

Coaches include Jim Bob Coleman, head coach, Skylar Watson, Clint Benway, Byron Cole and Lauren Campo.
