Geary Baseball, Softball Seasons End In District Tourney

GEARY - The Bison have wrapped up their spring on the diamond, as both the baseball and softball teams fell in their District tournaments last week to end the season.

The baseball team traveled to Maysville, where they matched up with the Warriors and the Oilton Panthers. The Bison had notched their first win of the season just a week before the tournament, but couldn’t carry that momentum with them to Maysville as they fell 10-0 to the Warriors and 13-1 to Oilton in the games.

Joe Littlebird scored the Bison’s only run of the tournament, in the bottom of the third against Oilton. Littlebird hit a one-out single, Geary’s first hit of the game, then advanced to second on a passed ball before Raul Espinoza was hit by a pitch and Major Lewis earned the team’s second hit to to load the bases.

Littlebird scored during Lanson Pratt’s at-bat, but the Bison couldn’t plate any more runs to bring the score closer.

Lewis also stole a base during the game. Izzy Yellowfish did most of the pitching for the Bison, striking out five Panthers during the game.

In the earlier game against Maysville, Espinoza and Pratt notched hits for the Bison while Lewis and Espinoza also stole a base. Littlebird took the mound for Geary in that contest, striking out six Warriors.

But the Bison gave up four runs in the bottom of the first and couldn’t string together any hits of their own.

Geary baseball finished the season with a 1-16 record, according to the OSSAA.

Geary softball, meanwhile, traveled to Hammon for matchups with the Lady Warriors and Corn Bible Academy. The Lady Bison picked up an impressive win over Corn Bible, 15-5, the second time this season they had defeated the Lady Crusaders.

But Geary dropped both its games to Hammon, 13- 3 and 12-0, to end its season. Despite the defeats, Geary head coach Rick Scott felt his team played well against the Lady Warriors and positive about the way it finished the season.

Watonga Softball Season Ends; Baseball To Face Calera

WATONGA - Watonga earned a come-from-behind victory over Burns Flat-Dill City last Tuesday, April 20, but fell twice to Hydro-Eakly later that day to end their slow-pitch softball season.

The Lady Eagles topped Burns Flat-Dill City 16-9 to start the District tournament in Hydro, but dropped consecutive games to the Lady Bobcats by 16-1 and 18-2 margins.

Hydro-Eakly is now 28-7 and moving on to Regional play, where it will host a four-team tourney against Boone-Apache, Minco and Navajo on Thursday, April 29. First pitch for game one is at 1 p.m.

Watonga baseball, meanwhile, recently discovered it will have a big challenge – and a long drive – in the Bi-District tournament to start the postseason.

The Eagles will face Calera, the No. 1-ranked team in district 2A-4, in the tournament this week. Calera is undefeated in district play and has dropped only four games all season, amassing a 24-4 record.

Watonga is 4-24 overall and 0-12 in district play.

The Eagles couldn’t find any winning momentum in the last week of the regular season, dropping two games to Luther and then one to Wellston over the weekend.

The Bi-District tournament begins on Thursday.
