Trenton Cole is a senior at Watonga High School and is in the middle of his senior year football season. Cole is also active in basketball, baseball, Heritage Club and FCCLA. He enjoys hunting and fishing and being out and about with friends.
While Trenton has only played football for a short number of years, he’s made himself a presence on the field and become the starting quarterback for the Watonga Eagles. Being thrown into this position for his senior year was “a lot of pressure” on Trenton, but it has also been one of the best experiences in his life. His favorite part about football is the bonds he’s been able to make while playing. “I just really enjoy traveling with the team and hanging out with the boys,” he said.
His dad, Coach Bryon Cole, is one of the biggest influences in his football career. Having him down on the sidelines is a positive thing for Trenton. He said, “He’s always been there to help me when I’m doing something wrong or when I can’t understand something. He’s just always been there.”
The Eagles have suffered some tough losses in recent weeks, but Cole is staying positive in his teammates and himself for the next games coming up. “We’re gonna go back to the basics and make sure that everybody’s doing the right thing,” he said. He personally aims to focus on his own mechanics and clean up his throws.
This season is the end for Trenton, as he has no plans to play football in college. “It’s sad, for sure, I really love this sport… I’m gonna miss it, especially with it being such a big part of my life now. It’s something I’m really dedicated to,” Cole said. He aims to enjoy every part of what he has left with his teammates, and he looks forward to upcoming games, specifically going up against Cashion.
The sport that he does intend to play in college is baseball. It’s always been “his sport” from the moment he was put into Little Leagues when he was very young. “The first time I ever played, I was like, this is my sport,” Trenton said. It’s a sport Cole finds himself relaxing in and not stressing about it as much as other sports he plays. Trenton has played all over the field, from outfield, to pitcher, to his current starting spot- catcher. It’s also his favorite spot on the field.
In contrast to football, his mom, Candace Cole, has taught him the most about baseball as he grew up. Both baseball and softball run deep in her family, which she passed on to Trenton, who fell in love with the sport. “She’s always just helped with baseball, and her dad was a coach,” he said. It’s been a family thing for him.
Right now, he doesn’t have a preference where he plays in college at, as long as he gets to continue playing. “I really wanna be able to step up and bring all the younger guys up and really have a team this year,” he said. His personal goal for the spring season is to “have more homeruns than everybody else.” He also wants to have fun while he’s doing it.
His brother, Brendan, has always been one of his biggest supporters, and has helped him become the type of athlete he is today. “He’s always pushed me to do my best… We were always just pushing each other to our best limits,” he said. Growing up, his older brother was always there to help him, trash talk him, and encourage him.
After high school, he plans to go to college and study Parks and Recreation, but also he aims to get his barbering license as a way to make money. He wants to keep having fun in life and stay the outgoing person he is. “I really look out for the people I love… I don’t like being by myself. If somebody’s left out, then they’re coming with me. I like being with people.”
