Jaydin Leger is a senior at Geary High School and is looking forward to graduating this year. He has a passion for helping people, and is on the school’s football, basketball, and baseball teams. He enjoys listening to music and playing video games. Jaydin has a bright future in the career of being a firefighter. He’s been very involved in sports from playing in church basketball groups from the age of 6, and starting football in the eighth grade.
Last fall, Leger completed his last season of football for his high school career. The Bison’s team had low numbers, but they all had the same drive to keep them going. They faced adversity but Leger commented on the fact that they still “went out there and worked harder than anyone else everyday.” Leger described his senior season of football as “awesome” and called his teammates “the best group of guys I know.” Jaydin strived to be a good example for his underclassmen teammates and lead the way for the future seniors of next year's team.
The main goal for this season for Jaydin and his teammates was to provide a new hope for future years of Bison football, and get more people involved in their school sports. Football has been very therapeutic for Leger throughout the years. It taught him how to be a team player and how to take care of a team.
Jaydin’s dad is the biggest pusher in his life. No matter what he participates in, Jaydin’s dad has always encouraged him to do his best that he can. “My dad’s a very successful person… and with me being the first born I feel like I gotta be just like him, set an example for the younger two,” Leger said. He also said he looks up to the professional football player Drew Brees, who plays for the New Orleans Saints. “He’s always been my favorite football player, he’s a great guy on and off the field.” Jaydin said he wishes to have a mentality like Brees to drive him. His mom has also always been his number one supporter.
Leger is also on the Bison basketball team, and the season is looking to be on a positive uphill climb for him and his team. “Our last game against Dover … we weren’t supposed to win that game, but for the first part of that game we played better as a team than we ever have against anybody else,” Jaydin said, “I think there’s signs of a really good future.” Basketball has been a pastime for him and his brother, and he strives to help him in the sport. “There’s been days where we've spent all day practicing and just making ourselves better, and just seeing him do good is… it really makes me happy as a big brother,” Jaydin said.
Leger has been moved around a lot as far as schools go. But none of them have impacted him as much as Geary has. Although it was rough for him at the start, he’s glad he’s ended up where he did. “The people are more genuine around here,” Leger said. “This place everybody knows their worth and they work for what they want.”
After high school he wants to go to college to get his Fire Science degree so he can become a full time firefighter. He also is interested in playing football in college too. Jaydin is currently a volunteer firefighter at the department in Geary. He was approached by the fire chief while working the counter at a convenience store and was offered the idea of doing volunteer work. He quickly got involved in the teen summer program. He has a passion for helping people. It’s something he’s wanted to do since he was a little kid. “It gives you a sense of… worth, like what you're doing is meaning something,” Leger said. “When I die one day I just wanna say that I did something for this world.”
