Whippets Slip by Geary
Sergio Pineda tucks the ball and runs it Thursday night against Okeene, while Jayden Woods, (24) blocks in the background.
Despite a heartbreaking blowout at the hands of cross-county rival Canton opening week, the Geary Bison hit the turf Thursday night ready to meet the Okeene Whippets. First year Bison head coach Johnny Ray said that despite a hardfought game against Canton, his players were coming into the Okeene game healthy and “Ready to go.”
The blue dogs were coming off a loss themselves, dealt last week by Class C Waynoka.
“I think this is a pretty good matchup,” Ray said Thursday pre-game. “We expect them to come out and run the ball against us. “
He added that although the Bison offense relies heavily on its ground game, he expected quarterback Mark Perez to gain a little airtime this week as well.
The Bison, however, had a difficult first half, and headed into the locker room behind by 20.
The second half, though, was a different story, with the Herd thundering back on offense and holding the blue dogs on defense, not allowing a single additional point. In the end, it wasn’t quite enough, with the scored ending up 24-26 in favor of the Whippets.
