Boys’ Summer Pride Suspended

Both Watonga high school and junior high athletics for the Eagles’ boys have been suspended until July 8 after one player tested positive for COVID-19 prior to a Summer Pride strength and conditioning workout last week.

“All players need to stay connected to our team app and continue to work out daily,” said a statement released on the Watonga Football official Facebook page. “Take extra precautions during this time and stay ready for when we come back together. Our thoughts and prayers are with the athlete as they battle this virus, and we know that a blessing is coming their way. See everyone after the holiday weekend.”

This is a minor setback for the Watonga football program as it prepares for the 2020 season, but student-athlete safety remains of utmost importance.

Originally, the period of time between June 27 through July 5 was supposed to be the dead period before the OSSAA voted unanimously earlier this month to cancel it.

On Monday afternoon, several Eagles’ varsity football players arranged a car wash at the Watonga First Assembly of God Church with hopes of raising funds for a team football camp to be set up in July.
