Canton, Okeene Rematch in Tourney

Many area basketball teams were in tournament play this weekend.

Canton and Okeene both saw court time in the Canton tournament.

On the boys’ side, the Canton Tigers tipped off Thursday against Cherokee, but could not come out with the win, succumbing to Cherokee in a 91-27 blowout. The loss didn’t keep the Tigers down, though and they came out strong Friday against Fairview, winning 55-24 to advance in the consolation bracket.

Meanwhile, the Okeene Whippets were following a similar trajectory. The blue dogs met Crescent Thursday and lost to the Crescent team 18-53. Friday, Okeene met Arnett on the court and worked for the W, taking the game in a nailbiter 66-65 shootout.

That lead Canton and Okeene to fight for the winner of the consolation bracket, a rematch of the Nov. 29 game, where Okeene won 34-52. Okeene came out on top this time as well, beating the host Canton by a score of 43-39.

The Canton boys play against Timberlake next, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 13.

Okeene will play Waukomis at 8 p.m. Dec. 13 on the road.

Calumet won the boy’s tournament, defeating Lomega 71-47.

When the ladies took the court, the two cross county rivals split the brackets, each going their own way.

Canton’s Lady Tigers took on the Arnett Lady Wildcats but could not summon a win, coming away with a 61-40 black eye. That sent them to the consolation bracket where they met the Fairview Lady Jackets and were stung in a 27-36 loss. The Fairview team was then handed its own loss by Calumet 39-37, giving Calumet the consolation bracket win.

Okeene Lady Whippets had a better tournament than the hometown hosts.

They advanced by beating Fairview 35-32 but were beat in turn by the Arnett Lady Wildcats 36-42.

The Lady Whippets went on to play and win against Cherokee 34-25.

Okeene will next play Waukomis on the road at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13.

Canton will next play Timberlake at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13.

Lomega won the girls tournament, defeating Arnett 80-53.
