The Watonga Lady Eagles poured on the offense Friday but ultimately dropped a back-and-forth ballgame to Waukomis by the final score of 11-10.
The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 2-6 overall for the season, according to the OSSAA.
Watonga exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third, notching a double from senior Brianna Brown and plating each of the first five hitters that inning to go up 7- 3 on the Lady Chiefs. But Waukomis responded immediately with a four-run fourth inning, tying the score at 7.
Defensive miscues may have been the difference for Watonga on the day. The two teams battled strong winds that intensified as the game went on, and the Lady Eagles committed five errors in the seventh inning alone — an inning that proved decisive, as Waukomis scored three more runs.
Trailing by two, the Lady Eagles had life in the bottom of the seventh after Waukomis walked the first two hitters. Junior Kaylee Roberts led off the inning and came around to score on an RBI groundout from Haylee Roberts. But a fouled third strike ended the game before Watonga could do more damage.
Kaylee Roberts started the game in the pitcher’s circle for Watonga and was replaced in the middle innings by senior Jaryn Lehman.
