The Watonga Eagles won big Friday over Medford Cardinals 18-9. They got on the board in the top of the first inning after Cooper House grounded out, and the Eagles scored on a wild pitch, each scoring one run.
The Medford Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the first thanks to a single by Cash Kelley, and a ground out by Brenden Winter.
But the Eagles took the lead in the top of the second inning after Zac Diaz singled, Medford committed an error, and Kingston Edwards balked, each scoring one run.
Watonga added to their early lead in the top of the third inning when Parker Roberts singled, scoring one run, Tyshon Wilson singled, scoring two, and Josh Brewer hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.
Medford scored seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jax Johnson singled, scoring one run, Edwards singled, scoring one run, Winter singled, scoring two runs, an error scored two runs, and Dillon Baxter drew a walk, scoring one run.
Roberts earned the win for Watonga. The starter allowed four hits and two runs over three innings, striking out one and walking none.
Reese Royal took the loss for Medford. The hurler went four innings, surrendering 10 runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking 10. Edwards began the game for the Cardinals. The starter surrendered three hits and eight runs (six earned) over two innings, striking out four and walking four.
Diaz tossed two and one-third innings of zero-run ball for Watonga in relief. The reliever gave up one hit, striking out none and walking three. Watonga collected nine hits in the game. Kegan Estep provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Watonga with three runs batted in. The shortstop went 2-for-4 on the day.
Diaz and Estep each collected two hits for Watonga. Karston Allen paced the Eagles with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up 14 walks for the game. Wilson and Estep each stole multiple bases for Watonga. The Eagles ran wild on the base paths, amassing seven stolen bases for the game.
Medford up 11 hits in the game. Winter drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Cardinals with three runs batted in. The infielder went 1-for-4 on the day. Kelley, Royal, Edwards, and Beau Clark each collected two hits for Medford. Colton Cink led the Cardinals with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, tallying six walks for the game.
The varsity Eagles will travel to Medford for their next game on Friday, April 4.
