Andrew Salmi Watonga Republican The Watonga High School Lady Eagles (top) and Geary High School Lady Bison (bottom) varsity softball squads each played a full 2019 fast-pitch season earlier this school year. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shutdown of all Oklahoma public and private schools in the state, both the Lady Eagles and Lady Bison had their 2020 slow-pitch seasons canceled. The Lady Bison were able to play a few slow-pitch games before their season ended abruptly due to the increasing severity of the coronavirus situation, while the Lady Eagles were unable to play any of their scheduled games in 2020.

Although we continue to not have any live sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an upcoming potential bright spot was revealed over the weekend for the 2020 Northwest Oklahoma City Top Prospect Softball Camp & Scrimmage scheduled to be held on July 6 at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond.

Watonga High School, Geary High School, and surrounding Blaine County area fast-pitch softball players that are incoming 8th grade through 12th grade (Class of 2021) are invited to improve their skills in three separate sessions.

Session A will be from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for all players, Session B is from 12:30 p.m. through 2 p.m. for just pitchers and catchers, and Session C will be in the afternoon from 2:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. for all players.

Sessions A and C will cost $100 per player who chooses to sign up, while Session B for pitchers and catchers will cost just $25 per player.

There will be 12 college softball coaches in attendance: Shaylee Cordell of host Oklahoma Christian University, Clay Davis of Northeastern State University, Kim Maher of Southwestern Oklahoma State University, Andrea Vaughan of Rogers State University, Brian Madden of Southern Nazarene University, Hallie Blackney of Missouri Southern University, Kyle Webb of Oklahoma Baptist University, Kyle Lem of Arkansas Monticello University, Suzanne Unruh of Friends University, Nickie Madden of Rose State College, Kayla Adams of Cameron University, and Amber Flores of Seminole State College.

Players interested in one or more of the sessions are encouraged to register on www.ladycatsoftball.com (Piedmont High School Softball Website) as soon as possible since there is limited space and all sessions the previous two years were sold out.

Before the camp arrives in early July barring no additional setbacks from the coronavirus situation, payments and registration are to be made online only. There will be no refunds and just in case of inclement weather the day of the camp, all softball activities will be moved indoors.

Contact Piedmont varsity softball head coach Keith Coleman via email at keith.coleman@piedmontschools.org or by phone at (918) 348-9904 for more information or additional questions. The final day to complete online registration is on June 30.

Be sure to check out future editions of the Watonga Republican and The Geary Star for more current Eagles’ and Bison sports updates as well as other news regarding the coronavirus situation going forward. All spring and summer activities for both Watonga Public Schools and Geary Public Schools are suspended until further notice.
