KINGFISHER – The Geary Lady Bison traveled to Kingfisher last Thursday, Sept. 23, for District play against Dover and Leedey. The Lady Bison put up

The Lady Bison put up some strong innings against their opponents but were ultimately swept out of the tournament, falling 12-0 to Dover and then 18-2 to Leedey to end their season.

Linda Espinoza and Elliott Harrall both notched hits for the Lady Bison in Game One, while Amaya Evans had a walk and a stolen base. Harrall’s hit went for extra bases, but she was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple to lead off the second inning.

In the second game, Haylee Gormley and Olivia Littleraven both scored in the first inning because of Leedey errors. But they would be the last Geary runs of the day, as the Lady Bison left three runners on base in the second inning and couldn’t get in the pitching groove to keep Leedey off the scoreboard.

After the game, Geary head coach Bridget Goodknight called the girls’ performances their best of the whole season.

“The defense that they have improved on throughout the entire season, today was the epitome of that,” Goodknight said. “Today was the day they took all the lessons we’ve learned throughout the season and implemented them every time we had a play. Everything we learned they implemented and executed – maybe not flawlessly, but the effort was there and they executed the defense that we’ve been working on.”

The team is only graduating three seniors this year, and Goodknight said she’s optimistic about next season.

“Moving forward, we’ve got some kids coming up from the junior high that are going to be able to pitch for us,” she said. “The kids that have stepped up this year, that never pitched before, will start taking lessons and continue to get better. I think you’re going to see something different next year. With what we’ve got coming up and the kids who are sticking around, we’ve got the potential to win some pretty good ballgames next year.”
