Geary High School and its activities may be canceled for the rest of the academic year due to the situation surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, but Geary athletics did get some great news this week as Bison varsity wrestlers Landon Holt and Max Glasgow were named 2020 all-stars by the Oklahoma Coaches Association.

Holt made the 2020 All-State Wrestling team as a member of the Large West squad in the 182-pound class, while Glasgow was named a Class 3A West All-Star in the 160-pound class.

The duo is coming off a very successful year for Geary varsity wrestling under head coach Matt Kennedy, as Holt eventually went all the way to becoming the Class 3A state champion on Feb. 29 at the 2020 OSSAA Wrestling Tournament held at Jim Norick Arena in Oklahoma City.

Like he had been for the entirety of the 2019-20 wrestling season, Holt was absolutely dominant in his three matches at the state tournament.

In the first round, Holt recorded a technical fall at 4:34 into the match to claim a one-sided 21-6 victory over Lesharo Wildcat of Pawhuska High School.

Earlier in the afternoon in the wrestle-in round, Wildcat defeated sophomore state qualifier and Watonga High School’s own 182-pound wrestler Joe Jackson to advance to face the 182 class’ top-seeded Holt.

Just one week prior during the Class 3A West Regional wrestling tournament held at Stegall-Long Fieldhouse in Geary, Holt and Jackson met in the semifinals of the 182-pound championship bracket. Although Jackson put up a valiant effort, Holt would get the win when he pinned the Eagles’ sophomore late in the match to record the fall.

Holt continued his impressive championship performance on Feb. 28 in the 182-pound state semifinals against Colton Bell of Locust Grove High School when the Geary senior standout recorded nine takedowns and cruised to a 20-6 majority decision to advance to the finals.

Mikey Riley of Blackwell, who Holt had pinned in just 33 seconds during the regional final one week prior, was Holt’s first-place match opponent once again.

The Bison standout senior again got the best of Riley and pinned him at 3:01 to record the match-winning fall, putting an exclamation point on a state championship-winning 2019-20 season.

As for Glasgow, the fellow Bison senior was solid throughout the season and even moved up to wrestle as high as the 170-pound class.

Glasgow compiled an impressive 24-14 overall record in his matches as a senior and made the podium at several tournaments.
