WATONGA – Watonga multisport star Landri Hussey has decided on her college path, and the school gathered to celebrate her last week.

Surrounded by family and coaches, Hussey committed to play basketball at Northern Oklahoma College during a ceremony at the Watonga High gymnasium last Thursday, April 14. The senior Lady Eagle was an instrumental part of Watonga’s formidable 2022 squad that nearly went to State.

Hussey’s high school coach Lauren Campo praised her work ethic and predicted success for her at NOC.

“She’s an awesome player all around,” Campo said after the ceremony. “Her dedication to whatever she’s doing is really where she’s phenomenal. She’s a ‘100 percent’ person. She never missed a practice for me, never, in four years.”

Hussey’s college choice is special for Campo, as the Watonga Lady Eagles coach also played at NOC under Coach Greg Krause. “I’m so excited about that. … Having played college ball myself, I know what it takes,” Campo said. “(I know) the fun she’s going to have, the lifelong memories she’s going to have, and it’s so awesome she’s going to get this opportunity.”

Krause told the Watonga Republican that he learned about Hussey through Campo – and that recommendation was noticed, coming from a former player.

“We appreciate coaches highly recommending their players if they believe in them,” Krause said. “That did carry a lot of weight. Everybody we talked to spoke about her work ethic and how hard she plays, all the time, everywhere on the floor. We brought her in and had her work out with our girls, too. She was a great fit.”

Finally deciding on a place for Landri was a surreal experience. All the hours and hard work in the gym and on the court has finally paid off. “It took forever to decide,” she said. However, once she did she felt confident in her decision that NOC was the place for her. “I’m really just going for it. … It feels fitting for me,” she said.

At first, reaching out to college coaches was nerve-racking for Hussey, as she had no idea what to expect. She had an immediate attachment to the Mavericks in

Tonkawa, however. “Once I talked to Coach Krause from Tonkawa, I knew it was home right from there,” she said.

Playing at the college level of basketball sometimes makes Hussey nervous, but she’s ready for the adjustment. “It’s a good challenge for me and I’ll be ready for it,” she said with confidence.

Coach Campo and Coach Alyssa Fuxa were both driving factors behind Landri’s love for the game. “They really reached out and helped me get where I want to be, and both of my parents have helped me a lot, and my sister inspired me to be the best player I can be,” she said.

Landri isn’t the only Hussey in NOC’s 2022 class – Keely Hussey, Landri’s cousin who played high school ball in Okeene, is also joining the Mavericks along with Kingfisher’s Allison Green. The Mavs announced the signings last week.
