From a determination to work hard in school to a love for basketball, Izzy Yellowfish lays out why he was picked as this month’s Outstanding Student.

Yellowfish, a senior at Geary High School, is seen as a leader in the eyes of the high school principal, Christa Burns.

“He is active in lots of things, such as our sports, academic team, concurrent classes, student council, and classrooms,” Burns said. “He is always uplifting and a positive spirit. You can see Izzy's smile even through that mask.”

And active he is. Yellowfish plays football, basketball, and baseball at Geary. He said basketball is his favorite sport.

“It’s my favorite because having the spotlight is kind of fun you know,” Yellowfish said.

On the academic side, Yellowfish said his favorite part of this school year is getting to actually be in school in person during the pandemic.

Getting to finish his football season was a plus for Yellowfish; however, when virtual schooling came around again, he was not a big fan as he feels learning virtually isn’t the same compared to in-person.

“It's not any harder than it is to just come to school, but it's boring,” Yellowfish said. “I feel like it's easier to cheat, and I'm fighting grades at that point.”

When thinking back on notable moments during his time in high school, Yellowfish concluded that every one of his home sports games were very notable. Especially one in particular.

“One time during a basketball game I hit 10 threes on the other team. That was a wicked night,” Yellowfish said.

Yellowfish said, he looks forward to Mr. Timothy Bench’s Physics class the most, and it has become his favorite class.

“He just teaches in a way that I can understand. It makes it a less hard class. It makes it more fun,” Yellowfish said.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, Yellowfish said he looks forward to finishing his sports as well as reaching graduation.

Yellowfish’s goals for this year don't stop there. After graduation, he hopes to be able to play college football potentially at SWOSU.

In order to get there, he recognizes he must continue to work hard saying, “Working hard becomes fun after a while once you get used to it. I appreciate that sense of accomplishment.”
