Lady Bison Have 'Come a Long Way' in Spring Softball

The Geary High girls didn’t have enough players to field a full squad Tuesday, so the junior high squad got an extra game in during a doubleheader with visiting Calumet.

The Lady Bison bats came alive, besting the Lady Chieftans 13-5 in the first game and 9-3 in the second.

Both contests were shortened to get more players involved. Some freshman girls were included in the first game, then sixth-graders joined the fray in the second.

Carmen Little Raven threw most of the day’s pitches for Geary, locking down the Calumet offense and keeping them far behind the potent Bison bats.

After the game, Geary head coach Rick Scott said he’s been pleased with the junior high girls’ progress through the season.

“I’m really proud of them,” Scott said. “They’ve really come a long way. We’ve won four, five, six ballgames this year, we’ve gotten better. We’ve still got a lot to work on, but I really feel like the growth was there. And they’re very coachable kids.”

Scott said his high school team has shown great potential, but needs more consistency. “We have had moments of brilliance, and if we could continue that, we could really surprise some people in Districts and Regionals.”

The Lady Bison recently found out they’ll be traveling to Hammon for District play along with Corn Bible Academy. Hammon is currently ranked No. 3 in Class A.

“We just have to be more consistent,” Scott said. “We’ll go three or four innings and not make an error, and then we’ll make six. So we just have to get more consistency, and we have to get more consistent at the plate.

“But the girls are trying hard. We’ve played some real tough competition, and I think it’ll make us tougher in the long run.”
