Lady Eagle coaches Lauren Campos and Alyssa Fuxa were guest at the Watonga Kiwanis noon meeting Feb. 2.

Both coach basketball as well as pitching in on softball duty.

Campos said the basketball team has had some adversity and holds an 11-and-7 record with three games to go in the season, Feb. 3 against Cashion at home, Feb. 7 against Seiling at home and Feb. 13 against Fairview on the road.

But the adversity has also created opportunity. “We had some kids come up and fill some new spots, and we have a really bright future with the junior high group,” Campos said. “We’re about to go to the playoffs fand face Seiling on Senior Night.”

Campos said Seiling is a tough team and it could spell a hard end to the season for the team and the two seniors who will take the court for their last regular season game that night.

With two players injured, there are nine players who can hit the hardboards now.

“We’ve got that new gym coming,” Campos said. “We’re looking forward to that.”

Fuxa primarily coaches the junior high students. She talked enthusiastically about those girls and how the future team is shaping up.

“We’re developing those kids,” she said. “We’re doing strength training and skills building. It’s definitely going to be a bright future for Watonga.”

At Watonga, like most small schools, the teams and sports overlap. Right now some basketball players are beginning to be lured away by track, and both coaches understand that, since the Eagle runners are regional powerhouses. And they both love and admire the track program.

But Fuxa wants to encourage any girl who hasn’t been in sports before to come out for basketball, or slow pitch softball, which is also a spring sport and starting soon. She said having or not having experience didn’t matter, that skills can be built. The important thing, she said, was for the kids to have a positive alternative to occupy them after school and on the weekends.
