Lydia Lafferty scored 23 points at the Big 12 Swim and Dive Championships last month, earning Second Team honors on the All-Big 12 Team.

The University of Kansas sophomore swam to a seventh-place finish in the 100 Fly and her 200 medley relay team placed fourth at the Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown, West Virginia. She also competed in the 50 free and 200 fly. Her 400 medley relay team was disqualified when the anchor took off before Lafferty hit the wall in the fly leg. Lafferty says she’s proud of the finish to her second season as a University of Kansas Jayhawk. “I injured my back right before the mid-season and was unable to compete. It was a pretty big blow not to go to that meet because I had been feeling good leading up to that, so it was awesome to come back strong for the conference meet,” she said.

Looking forward, the swimmer will focus solely on sprint fly, back and freestyle for the second half of her college career. She and the coaching staff both agree this training will help her be even more competitive as a sprinter.

Lafferty grew up in Watonga and is the daughter of Ladd and Leigh Ellen Lafferty.
